Any business can set up SIP Trunks, IP-enabled PBX or PABX’s, SIP Handsets, SIP terminal devices to enable Telfree calls to be made and received directly from the office desktop phones. The Telfree service is ideally suited for use on an IP-PBX, a PABX with analogue or digital SIP VoIP adaptors, thereby eliminating the need for cellular least-cost-routing devices.

Your SIP Settings

Your Telfree account has its own unique SIP username (different from your general Telfree username) that must be used to access the Telfree Gateway. To get your account settings, log into www.telfree.com, select the Telephony option, followed by SIP Details. From there the settings are pretty standard and self explanatory!

Supported Hardware

Telfree inter-operates with various models of IP and SIP telephony. Telfree is certified by Siemens globally and has proven particularly popular with Asterisk PBX’s. Other highly recommended hardware vendors are Cisco, ShorTel and Samsung.

That means that with every monthly subscription to the Ultimate Package, you automatically get 300 minutes to make calls around the world, at no additional cost. The free minutes generally apply to calling fixed-line numbers, but in 11 of those countries, you can also call the mobile numbers  in that country for free.

We wanted to make sure that the Telfree service is actually a proper telephone service, among other things. Like with any other operator, we are able to issue a number, not just a random number, but a 2787 number that is internationally recognized in the traditional telephony network worldwide and that is unique and exclusive to you. This means that when you make calls, the person you are calling won’t see a funny private number and you will be fully identifiable – like this:

Because the 2787 is recognized worldwide, your friends can call you back on your 2787 number even if they are not Telfree users – as they can call you back from their traditional fixed line or mobile operator.

The cost of calling a 2787 number when you are not a Telfree user depends on where you are calling from and from which operator. The rate for calling this number will typically be the same as calling a fixed line in South Africa – so check with the mobile operator for their rates.

Telfree’s iPhone application supports iPhones and iPod Touches.  You can make and receive calls on your iPhone using both Wi-Fi AND 3G. The Telfree iPhone application is the first and currently the only known application that allows you to receive calls even when you are not logged into the Telfree application, using Telfree’s innovative Push Call technology.  This is a significant step in making a VoIP application on the iPhone a complete phone service that we believe gives it the edge in the market.
